Located in White River State Park, Indianapolis Zoo is more than just a zoo; it is also home to an accredited botanical garden and aquarium.
The zoo opened its doors to the public on 1964 on East 30th St, it took two decades to make the vision of the zoo a reality and when first opened it was home to an Asian elephant, kangaroos, penguins some native buffalo and bison and some small mammals. Within twenty years the zoo had outgrown its East 30th St facility and was moved to larger premises within White River Gardens and opened this new facility to the public in 1988.
