It boats a collection of over 2,000 animals and is considered to be one of the premier tourist attractions in the area. One of the main attractions at the zoo is the Range of the Jaguar which focuses on the animals resident in neotropical rainforests. The zoo has an active conservation and breeding program and is home to an impressive colony of breeding woodstorks. The zoo first opened its doors to the paying public in May 1940; with the first animal exhibit it received being a red deer fawn.
