The LA Zoo was founded in 1966 and is owned entirely by the city of Los Angeles with every staff member being employed by the city.
The LA Zoo’s predecessor, Griffith Park Zoo, opened in 1912 just 2 miles to the south of the current location and closed its door in 1966 due to public outcry from the 2 million yearly visitors. It became known as a poorly financed zoo with unsightly attractions that people grew tired of. Because of the criticisms, the city agreed to create a new and improved zoo which would become known as The Los Angeles Zoo.
