Situated in Philadelphia’s Centennial District, Philadelphia Zoo was the very first zoo in the US.
Located on the Schuylkill River’s west Bank it was founded in 1859, but because of the American Civil War did not open until 1974. At the time of opening it was home to 1,000 animals. It is now a highly respected breeding zoo and does work to ensure the protection and conservation of endangered species. Today visitors can encounter more than 1,300 animals, enjoy the children’s zoo and learn from numerous interactive exhibits and displays. One of the most popular areas of the zoo is the First Niagara Big Cat Falls.
