Southwick’s Zoo began life as a dairy farm, though farming was soon given over as Justin F. Southwick expanded his collection of exotic poultry. Based in Mendon, Massachusetts the zoo is still privately owned and family run just as it was when it first opened its doors to the public in 1963.
The facility is still sited on what was the Southwick’s family homestead. Over the years the range of animals grew from exotic birds to all kinds of animals including river otters, elk, red deer and painted turtles. Birds have always had a special place within the zoo and the collection now contains parakeets, macaws, ostriches, flamingos and kookaburra plus many more.
